Rachel + Ben’s rainy Kingman Island adventure engagement session

Rachel + Ben tied the knot this past weekend at City Winery, and I had so much fun with them! I should’ve known, after the time we had together for their engagement session last fall. Rachel + Ben met a few years ago playing kickball (apparently, Rachel “wasn’t very good, but made up for it with enthusiasm at the happy hours afterward”), and today they live over on Capitol Hill. We decided to stick close to home for their engagement session, going to one of their favorite neighborhood spots, Pretzel Bakery (did you know they do weddings? I recently spotted their pretzels as a late-night snack at another wedding) for a snack before heading over to the boardwalk at Kingman Island, one of my favorite hidden oasises in DC!

Hilary + Mike’s Gaithersburg MD mini-golf engagement session | Washington DC authentic wedding photography

What happens when you combine a favorite childhood park, a summer thunderstorm, and one of my all-time favorite date night activities? As it turns out, a super-fun engagement session! Last summer, I headed up to Gaithersburg to meet Hilary and Mike for their engagement session. The skies looked a little ominous while we were at the park, but…

Kelsey + Keegan’s cozy Saturday morning engagement session at home in Dupont Circle

Home is where the heart is… no, really! My couples ask me over and over the best way to have a unique, memorable engagement session. My answer is a no-brainer, but it usually surprises people — have your session at home! No, this doesn’t have to involve cleaning your place from top to bottom and hiring an interior designer for a swoon-worthy living room… all I’m saying is, you picked where you live for a reason, so let’s stay in the neighborhood! The streets, alleyways, nooks and crannies of your neighborhood have a magic that can unlock some really personal-feeling photos. On a rainy and relatively

Woodsy Ellicott City ruins engagement session | Maryland wedding photographers

It used to bother me that with the seasons, the color palette of my photos changed. These days, I try to embrace the changing temperatures and the impact they have on my photos. (Plus, I have enough photos from over the years to keep my Instagram grid looking balanced!) Cooler temperatures mean more earth and jewel tones in my photos, and more hikes and campfires in my leisure time. So I was intrigued when…

A #SoutheastLove DC engagement session at Anacostia Park | Washington DC wedding photography

I don't know about y'all, but with this muggy summer weather, some snow actually sounds great right about now.... and wouldn't you know, that on the literal first day of spring, that's what we got for Leah + Brent's engagement session? But these two were total good sports, and we made use of their adorable front porch  (hooray, new homeowners!) when things got too wet and cold at the park! They really killed it in less-than-ideal conditions, and I cannot WAIT for their wedding tomorrow at Toolbox in Dupont Circle!

Lauren + Peter's Capitol Hill and US Supreme Court engagement session

Lauren + Peter are the most lovely humans... I'm so excited to have gotten to spend a beautiful afternoon exploring all the nooks and crannies of one of our mutual favorite neighborhoods, Capitol Hill, with these two! We found beautiful alleyways, hung out outside Barnaby Books, and finished up with the most beautiful light on the columns at the Supreme Court. What a perfect DC afternoon!

Shelly + Ryan's National Portrait Gallery engagement session

Ryan met Shelly when he hired her friend at work, and Shelly stopped by the office. Soon enough, they were on their first date at an Orioles game, and fast forward to this weekend when they're tying the knot at Linganore Winery! Ryan says Shelly is his best friend, and Shelly loves that he makes her smile all the time. We had a lot of fun wandering the halls of the National Portrait Gallery and surrounding neighborhood. Here's to their wedding day being equally wonderful!

Caye + Colin's sunny Blagden Alley engagement session in Shaw | Washington DC engagement photographer

Real talk: I hate to admit it, but not all photo sessions are created equal. The weather, or the season, or the venue, or the light, or a wardrobe malfunction, or a weird camera malfunction (this is why I carry backup gear!) or even someone just having an off day or a bad mood are all super-common things that as a professional photographer, I deal with all the time. And it's my job to handle them gracefully, and in the words of Tim Gunn, "make it work". I'm always proud of my ability to do that, and for the most part, my couples never even know that it was a thing! But a handful of times every season....

Nathalie + Chris' snowy Christmas DC engagement in Petworth & Union Station

Merry Christmas! It certainly doesn't seem to be a white Christmas in DC this year, but that one afternoon earlier in December that it snowed? Nathalie and Chris had their engagement session! I don't shoot that many winter engagement sessions, but Nathalie was excited by the idea and really loves the holiday spirit, so we decided to go for it. Hands down, this is one of my favorite sessions of the year, and maybe ever... there's something for everyone in this session!

Caitríona + Michael's colorful engagement at US Capitol Lower Senate Park

The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry. And yet, sometimes, that's a good thing, and in return for putting your trust in the universe, the universe puts its trust in you. When Caitríona, Michael, and I arrived at the National Portrait Gallery atrium to take some beautiful air-conditioned snaps before heading out into DC's July heat... we were a bit flummoxed! Despite our calling ahead, the atrium was set up for a private event... and while the space was open to the public, we weren't planning a gala-themed engagement session...

Pras + Kristi's Pierce Mill at Rock Creek Park engagement

Kristi + Pras are charming, well-spoken, and warm... and wouldn't you know, the weather on the day we'd scheduled their engagement was forecast to be a perfect match for their sunny personalities! We were so excited to escape DC without-escaping-DC by heading down to Pierce Mill at Rock Creek Park! Well, when I popped out of the Metro at Cleveland Park, a crazy little summer storm had popped up out of nowhere, but luckily by the time Kristi + Pras had arrived, it had blown over as quickly as it had arrived, and we had a beautiful, sunlit few hours in the park!

Laura + Dave's Saturday adventure Baltimore engagement

Adventure day! Baltimore is awesome. Laura + Dave call Pittsburgh (another awesome city) home, but Laura grew up outside of Baltimore, and they'll be tying the knot in Baltimore this fall. Since their wedding is at the beautiful Hillendale Country Club, we decided to explore some of Baltimore's great urban neighborhoods for their engagement! Laura + Dave were in town for the weekend for some wedding planning, so I took the commuter train up for the day, and we started at Baltimore Penn Station...

Amber + Andy's breezy holiday Kennedy Center engagement session

Meeting and getting to know my couples before their wedding day is so important, and one of my favorite parts of that is an engagement session! I met up with Amber + Andy on a beautiful-turned-blustery day in late November at the Kennedy Center. As we got going, clouds rolled in, and the wind whipped up, but we found some lovely spots like a beautiful holly hedge before gale-force winds finally forced us inside!

Jillian + Alex's Dupont Circle + Shaw Atlantic Plumbing urban engagement session | Washington DC wedding + engagement photography

Jill + Alex are a dream team. Jill is a coworker of my friend Liz, and Alex is a fellow American University alum (though we didn't know any of that until after we'd met. But then, great people surround themselves with other great people.)  They're getting married in New York,  but wanted to rock some engagement photos closer to home. We decided on a stylish, urban vibe -- so we started by walking the alleyways of Dupont Circle on a perfect afternoon. Then we headed over to north Shaw, to one of my new favorite spots in the city...
